Patients Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such drugs should be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to starting mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Experts suggest the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly starving," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural changes.
