No fewer than thirteen people lose their lives and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its role in national infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated speed, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party urged an immediate halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
